U18 Girls - Haverfordwest RFC V Nantyffyllon RFC
The girls returned to action on 20th February when Nantyffyllon made the return trip to Haverfordwest. The visitors started with a bang and scored 3 first half tries. A pep talk from the coaches at half time did the trick and some excellent rugby brought the blues back in contention with an exciting game ending in a satisfactory 24-24 draw.
On Sunday 6th February our U18 Girls travelled to play Nantyffyllon , near Maesteg. Despite the wet and windy weather conditions the girls were still keen to play. The whistle blew for kick off and within three minutes the Blues scored their first try. Jessica Richards stole the ball from the opposition and ran 40m down the pitch to off-load to Ndey Kabia, who side stepped two defenders to score the Haverfordwest opening try of the match.
Shortly afterwards another try was scored by Zoe Daye through an interception. Jessica Richards then followed up with another good try, which started from a maul, where Bryony Dixon brought the ball in, secured by Samantha Palen and Lauren Hawkins. The ball then passed through the hands of Emma Westoby, Christy Bowling, Sophie Powell and Sinead Parkinson, to Jessica who fought off two defenders to ground the ball, scoring in the corner. This brought the score to 15-0.
With the wind behind the girls a kick for space by Christy Bowling saw Haverfordwest sprint down the pitch to score again, the second try of the match for Zoe Daye.
In the second half, with the wind at their backs Nantyffyllon started coming back- they scored three tries, bringing the score to 20-15. The Haverfordwest girls didn’t give up. They continued to put in some hard hits and strong runs. Both Rhian Perry and Christy Bowling had two excellent breaks, just to be stopped before the line. Their efforts eventually paid off. The Girls ended the game on a high, scoring the final try. This was scored by Jess Jones, as she ran 40m of the pitch, side stepping numerous opposition, and powering her way through to score an excellent try. Leaving the final score 25-15 to the Haverfordwest Girls.
